Where to go to get good career advice?

At School

Every school has a guidance counselor. It is important that you meet with your guidance counselor on a regular basis to discuss your future and the opportunities that are available to you. They are there to answer any questions you may have. Remember to ask specific questions about all your options including, vocational education, cegep/college, university study or training, the courses on offer, the cost and the entrance requirements, apprenticeship programs, voluntary/community work that may help you in the future, and lastly jobs and occupations that are in demand now and in the future.

Parents and Relatives

Talk to parents and relatives. They may know someone in a particular field of work, or they may have worked in an occupation that you are interested in. remember though to take the good advice with the bad. Don’t be swayed by their negative or outdated career perceptions.

Older Brothers/Sisters

Talk to your older brothers/sisters they have been through what your going through now and they might have some great pointers to give you on where to get valuable information.

Local Community Members

Ask local community members and business people for advice if they are involved in the area of work that you are interested in. You can find out about the kind of skills you will need in the workplace, the working conditions and hours, pay ranges and courses you need to work in that particular area.

Use the Internet

Many Internet sites and resources on the web will help you learn more about specific job descriptions. Follow the links on this web site to help you get started.

Entrepreneurs/Businesses

If you want to start your own business – find out what other business owners have to say by talking to them. This is probably the best way to find the facts when running your own business.

School Career Fairs

Attend career fairs at school, locally or at different institutions. This is your opportunity to hear it “straight form the horse’s mouth” – and that means asking questions, questions, questions!

Networking

Networking is a great way to get information and advice. To find out more go to the networking section of this site.

Create opportunities for yourself

Getting good career advice means finding information on training and courses, about jobs or potential careers that you think you would be interested in pursuing. Remember you need to be in control of your own destiny so go out and create opportunities for yourself. It is important for you to receive advice that is not biased, or incorrect, so choose your source very carefully. After receiving any advice think through what the person has said to you and weigh up the pros and cons if there are any.
