School Life
At Lord Aylmer we start the year off with our annual BBQ to welcome all staff members and families to the new school year.
In September, teachers and students work hard at getting to know each other and are using Tribes energizers and activities that promote inclusion within their classrooms. September also brings the Terry Fox run which is an activity where the whole school participates, walking, running and raising money for cancer.
In October, the Sr. Campus students participate in football and soccer tournaments. The Home and School organize our annual Halloween dance and finally, on the 31st, the whole school participates in various Halloween activities including watching a Tribes play performed by staff members.
In November, the students at the Sr. Campus usually prepare their speeches for the English Public Speaking Contest and both Campuses participate in a Remembrance Day assembly. It is also during this month that the teachers are getting ready to meet the parents to talk about their child/children’s progress.
December brings a variety of activities. The students at the Sr. Campus present their projects at the Science Fair one year alternating with International Fair, and the Home & School organizes the Christmas Bazaar. The Symmes Band usually visits both campuses, and the cycle 1 students in French Immersion offer a recital to the students and their parents.
January and February are also filled with enriching and exciting activities. The cycle 3 students go skating at the Isabelle and Paul Duchesnay arena as part of our Wellness grant. The whole school participates in various reading activities during the last week of January as it is usually our annual I LOVE TO READ WEEK. In February, students at the Senior Campus are getting ready for their Student Lead Conferences while the students at the Junior Campus receive a formal report card. The whole school participate in a fabulous Winter Activity Day going skiing, snowboarding or tubing.
In March, students at the Sr. Campus are preparing for the “Concours Oratoire” which is the French Public Speaking. The cycle 3 students start going swimming at the “Centre Aquatique Paul Pelletier” also part of the Wellness Grant. In April, the students at the Jr. Campus are getting ready to present their portfolios to their parents at student led conferences, while the students at the Sr. Campus are receiving a formal report card. Also, selected students in cycle 2 and 3 participate in a Provincial Math Competition.
In May and June most students are working on their Math, English Language Arts and French Ministry Epreuves which are the end of year exams. Students are getting ready to participate in the Track and Field event and have an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity when participating in “Fleurs de Macadam” which allows them to reproduce their drawing on the sidewalk using chalks. As the school year is ending, teachers are working on their last report cards and are organizing end of the year field trips. Our cycle 3.2 students have their graduation in recognition of all the hard work they have done over the years and to celebrate the transition from elementary to secondary school. Finally, the whole school participates in a “Tribes Day” filled with fun activities in order to celebrate the arrival of summer and the holidays.
Our ongoing activities include Homework Club, Reading Buddies, Mentorship Program, Skillstreaming Program targeting different classes and students working on specific social skills, Tribes activities throughout the year, Principal’s Awards Assemblies every month, and School wide Assemblies where each class has a chance to present songs, chants, skits or dances to the whole school. Parents are always welcome to attend these assemblies.
*Please note, this is a general guideline of our activities for the year. Occasionally, there are changes made.
